Survey Of Israel - Geodesy

 Geodesy

All the surveying and mapping activities in the country are based on the geodetic infrastructure, developed through the years, became modern, precise and maintained at all times. The Survey of Israel is responsible for it. The Survey of Israel is also responsible for the professional standards in the country and those active in the profession within geodesy, cadastre, mapping and information systems. In order to handle these responsibilities, the government established the position of Chief Scientist at the Survey of Israel.

The realm of responsibility

  • Establishment and maintenance of the national geodetic datum, which is based today on the GNSS permanent stations.
  • Establishment and maintenance of geodetic control (horizontal, vertical and three-dimensional).
  • Geodetic surveys services to the various departments of the Survey of Israel and to government approved clients.
  • Procession geodetic data and checking geodetic computations for scientific, cadastral, engineering and other purposes.
  • Specialized surveys and maintaining data on the sea level, geomagnetic and gravimetric fields.

The Deputy Director General statement

The areas of Geodesy and the Chief Scientist (run by Dr. Gershon Steinberg, who retired in June 2009) changed dramatically in the last few years. The geodetic datum of Israel is based today on satellite geodesy (on the basis of permanent GNSS stations). The use of ellipsoidal heights and of statutory geoid became officially recognized.
Director General's instructions propagate the use of satellite geodesy for cadastral purposes.
The main challenge for the immediate future is to publish new survey ordinance and the Director General's instructions in relevant areas.
